The parking lot for the Phoenix corporate offices of Cox Communications Inc. is now
home to a 150 kW solar power system.
The Phoenix Business Journal reports that the company has completed construction
on its new solar array, which will double as a cover for the open-air parking lot. The
installation was installed by two Arizona companies - RMJ Electrical Contractors in
Phoenix and U.S.-Prefab. in Glendale - and Alpha Technologies of Vancouver,
British Columbia.
Arizona Corporation Commission Chairwoman Kris Mayes praised the installation,
noting its location near two airports will help publicize solar power. "It's my hope
that one day when people are flying into Deer Valley Airport or Sky Harbor Airport
that they are seeing as many solar panels as they are swimming pools in
backyards," she says.

Cox Communications Inc. turned on sun power in Phoenix, plugging into a solar power generation system in its parking lot.
The 150-kilowatt system officially opened Wednesday at Cox’s Phoenix headquarters near the Phoenix Deer Valley Airport. It’s the latest step the Atlanta-based company is taking in terms of sustainability.
“This is way beyond the stage of being a fad or a flavor of the month at companies,” said Steve Rizley, senior vice president and general manager for Cox in Arizona.
The solar system has been under construction for several months in Cox’s parking lot and will have the added benefit of providing covered parking for employees.
Arizona Corporation Commission Chairwoman Kris Mayes, who along with Commissioners Paul Newman and Bob Stump were on hand for the dedication, said the system is a challenge to others in the state to take a more proactive stance on renewable energy.
“It’s my hope that one day when people are flying into Deer Valley Airport or Sky Harbor Airport that they are seeing as many solar panels as they are swimming pools in back yards,” she said.
Cox President Pat Esser said the Arizona solar generation is another step the company is taking throughout its operations to be more sustainable.
“It’s a major milestone for us,” he said.
Cox in Arizona competed with other regional centers for funds from a company-generated program.
“We had to make a case to do this, and what better place to that than Arizona,” Rizley said.
Cox is planning other solar endeavors, but Rizley said because of the current economy officials aren’t putting any timetable on those projects.
Installing the project were Alpha Technologies from Vancouver, British Columbia, RMJ Electrical Contractors in Phoenix and U.S.-Prefab. in Glendale.
